In his twenties, French painter and printmaker Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a member of a group of young artists called Les Nabis. Committed to creating work of symbolic and spiritual nature, the group included other young, like-minded artists Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. In 1910 Bonnard left Paris for the south of France, whereupon his attention turned to creating sun-drenched canvases populated with friends and family members. This print, with its wonderful, vibrant sense of light, typifies Bonnard's sensibility in this regard, even though little is known of its subjects.
